Leptospermum is a genus of flowering plants in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae), mainly native to Australia and New Zealand. These plants, commonly known as tea trees or manuka, are small evergreen shrubs or trees, typically 2-5 metres tall.
Leptospermum are an excellent choice for bonsai for several reasons:
• Naturally small leaves
• Compact growth habit (many species naturally grow with dense branching)
• Beautifully textured bark that flakes with age
• Produces abundant white or pink flowers
Popular species for bonsai:
• Leptospermum scoparium (Manuka)- commonly used with numerous cultivars offering different flower colours
• Leptospermum laevigatum (Coastal Tea Tree)- develops attractive twisted trunks and gnarled branches
• Leptospermum obovatum – smaller leaves and denser growth than other species
Care Requirements;
• Full sun to part shade
• Good air circulation to prevent fungal issues
• Protection from extreme frost in colder areas
• Water more frequently during growth phases and reduce watering in winter
• Deadhead after flowering to encourage branching
• Remove woody seed capsules as they remain on plant for years
• Repot younger trees every 2-3 years
• Repot older trees every 3-5 years
